Oh what a relief it was as I swapped demanding perennials for sizzling flowering shrubs. Western climates are much more varied than Eastern ones. The blooms also make excellent cut flowers. They have around fifty to one hundred and fifty species. Most species are spiny, with attractive fall foliage, huge numbers of small flowers in the spring, and attractive berries which linger for a long period.

Plus, the plants bloom their heads off from late spring until mid-autumn with a heavy show of purple-blue flower spikes that are extremely attractive to pollinators and beneficial insects. The blooms also make excellent cut flowers. The plant grows from 2 to 3 feet tall with blue-green, fuzzy, egg-shaped leaves that grow from 1 to 2 inches long. Leading expert on woody plants Jim Gardiner has distilled several decades of knowledge and experience into The Timber Press Encyclopedia of Flowering Shrubs, an incomparable pictorial reference of hardy shrubs that excel in temperate-zone gardens. I felt as if I was becoming a slave to my gardens. Cranberry Cotoneaster Cranberry cotoneaster Cotoneaster apiculatus is a deciduous shrub native to Western China.

Azaleas have thousands of varieties and have various colors, like pink, red, orange, purple, yellow and white. Look for plants called "shrub roses" or "heirloom roses. The Flowering of the Landscape Garden. Lilac The lilac flowering bush is a favorite amongst gardeners.

The plant grows from 2 to 3 feet tall with blue-green, fuzzy, egg-shaped leaves that grow from 1 to 2 inches long. Drought-tolerant yarrow thrives in a sunny garden and produces mid to late summer flowers in soft pastel shades or rich, jewel tones.

The plant may be short in stature, but it will be long on color. Forsythia is a harbinger of spring but many varieties can quickly overgrow their bounds and sucker aggressively. Weigela is another popular spring blooming shrub but many in this family can get pretty big. The berry-less but highly fragrant hybrid Viburnum carlesii Source 3.

Camellia japonica with its glossy leaves comes in white, pink, and striped as well as red. The scent perfumes the air like sweet-smelling sachet, emanating from large panicles of delicate lavender flowers.

Flowering Shrubs are also well set for areas in the garden where other plants or even grass is difficult to grow. Light stimulates flower bud development, so grow rhododendrons where they receive sufficient light but not full sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Its dazzling yellow flowers illuminate the spring landscape. Hydrangea Hydrangea bushes have come back into fashion recently.

The butterfly bush is also attractive to hummingbirds. There are so many species that it is always possible to find one to suit a particular need. I felt as if I was becoming a slave to my gardens.

Flowers start out as green-white, change to white and grow on oval, green spikes 2 inches long and 1 inch wide in April or May. There are varieties which do well in wet soil or drought-prone soils and in full sun or shade.

Garden suppliers are always developing new varieties with increased frost tolerance. All of these have beautiful blooms and can be planted to enhance the beauty of your garden. Because they prefer partial shade, they make colorful additions to woodland gardens.

Clipping out faded flowers will ensure months of bloom. The spines make Berberis an ideal bush to keep out intruders and it is often used around vulnerable windows.

The white flowers are smallish but pretty, and the blue-black berries are eaten by humans, birds, and animals alike. Finally, check out these stunning shrubs for a fall finale and encore.
